Nassula picta: feeds on cyanobacteria, in this image: Phormidium sp.; focus plane on the oral basket with which the cyanobacterium is ingested. (Schwelm, Kreishaus 2.7.2012) (2)

Nassula picta (2). during the feeding process, the still undigested trichome is pushed further and further into the ciliate cell and thereby bent in a U-shape. Apparently, this trichome is so elastic that the ciliate cell is literally stretched like a tent.

Nassula picta (2) when the trichome is split into several parts the ciliatre cell resumes the oval shape.
Nassula picta; encysting specimens.

Nassula picta, cysts; focus plane on the opening of the oral basket (cyrtos)
